My response:
Yeah *sigh*.
If you look back, every era has its own unique reasons for hating Madonna. You had the Like A Prayer era where she was labelled as ‘blasphemous’; the Erotica era (pinnacle of her backlash) where detractors reduced to her as a ‘whore’; the American Life where she was viewed as ‘anti-American’ etc etc etc.
With this era, the seething hate is filled with sexism (as usual) but especially ageism.
I don’t think Madonna has changed significantly in terms of her artistry, it’s society that’s changed. Detractors nowadays don’t lambast Madonna for being sexual as much anymore, mostly because Madonna normalised sexuality so long ago. They now resort to other ludicrous aspects like her age and imply that she’s desperate to stay relevant.
The most ridiculous is when people say Madonna has no talent. How can you be the only musician to dominate the industry this long if you only relied on business savvy or controversy? How can you sell over 300 million records if you don’t have any artistic virtuoso?
Dealing with the hate is a very eye-opener experience for fans for good and bad reasons. It’s bad experience because it annoys you to no bounds. However it’s a good experience because you realise how much of an impact Madonna has on the world and just makes you appreciate her more. She’s been dealing with hate from Day 1 and is still stronger than ever.
