For me, out of all of M’s albums, American Life is the hardest to pick a favourite from. Contrary to popular opinion, American Life is my favourite Madonna album (and of all time) for limitless reasons. It’s disappointing to know it was received so coldly when it was released. It remains criminally underrated and misunderstood. I’m happy to know it’s now heavily embraced by the community.
If I had to choose my favourite song from American Life, it would be X-Static Process. It got me through a dark period in my teenage years. During that time, I couldn’t believe I could relate so much to Madonna in this song. I love how the song deals with themes of hopelessness but ends with positivity: “But in the process I forgot that I was just as good … as you.”
